Bosquet – 1975, for sale at ArtRow, Victoria, BC.

Marcelin Cardinal’s painting, Bosquet, is an acrylic on canvas that is currently for sale at ArtRow in Victoria, British Columbia (https://artrow.com/artwork/bosquet/). As Bosquet is a painting from 1975, it was painted in Marcelin’s old studio in the Borough of Verdun in Montréal. In July 1976, Marcelin and Roseline moved into an apartment building on the northside of Chemin Queen Mary not far from Boulevard Décarie. Their apartment was on the top floor on the north-east corner of the building. In addition to the apartment, Marcelin made arrangements with the owner of the building to rent what had once been a parking garage at the base of the building to use as his studio. (I will write about this studio in a future blog). In August 1976, my wife Susan and I moved into our apartment also on the top floor but on the south-east corner of the building. The first neighbours we met in the building were Marcelin and Roseline.

Once a painting was finished, Marcelin would often hang it in their apartment so that he could, “live with it for a while”. Some paintings would not come down while others would and these he would sell. I can remember first seeing Bosquet on a living room wall in their apartment in 1976. It stayed on the wall for some time but was put up for sale and sold at an exhibition of Marcelin’s work at the Galerie Don Stewart in Montréal in 1981. A detailed critique of Marcelin’s work at this time was written by Germain Lefebvre (1981) including references to works exhibited at the Galerie Don Stewart.
